Word Alchemy: Mind, Body, Spirit, Money
Four words sit before us like four pillars. Mind. Body. Spirit. Money. Pulled apart, each one becomes a fragment. Set in correct order, they form the architecture of a man under command.
Mind. The Old English root is gemynd. Memory, intention, awareness. The deeper Proto Indo European root is men, the same root that gives us mental, memory, monitor, mention. The Latin mens names reason, the seat of judgment. The Sanskrit manas points to the faculty of perception, will, and discernment. In its original sense, the mind is the disciplined faculty by which a man perceives, decides, remembers, and intends. The mind was built to govern, to direct attention, to hold the line against impulse and illusion. A wandering mind is a mind in disrepair.
Body. The Old English bodig referred to the trunk, the frame, the working mass of a thing. In Arabic, jasad names the physical form, and badan names the working instrument. The Quran calls the body amana, a trust. Every limb you carry, every organ at work, every breath drawn without effort. All of it was issued to you on loan. You will be questioned about how you used it. The body is the instrument through which the unseen acts in the seen. Without the body, intention has no expression. Without the body, prayer has no posture. Without the body, sacrifice has no cost.
Spirit. The Latin spiritus comes from spirare, to breathe. The same root gives us inspire, expire, respiration. The Hebrew ruach and the Arabic ruh both carry the same meaning. Breath. Wind. The hidden current that animates the form. Allah says of the creation of man, when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My ruh, fall down to him in prostration. The ruh in you is the breath of Allah placed in clay. The spirit is what answers when the body dies. The spirit already knows the truth, even when the mind argues and the body resists.
Money. The English word descends from the Latin moneta, originally a title of the Roman goddess Juno, in whose temple coin was struck. The deeper root is monere, to warn, to advise, to remind. Money was named after warning. Read that again. Every dollar in your hand is a quiet admonition. The Arabic mal names wealth, property, that which is possessed. The Quran calls mal a fitnah, a test. Money serves as a witness. It records what you worship. It exposes what you protect. It announces what you sacrifice for. The man who controls his money has decoded the warning. The man who is controlled by his money has failed the test before reading the question.
Mind. Body. Spirit. Money. Set in this order, the meaning emerges. The mind perceives the truth. The spirit submits to the truth. The body executes the truth. The money obeys the result. When this chain breaks, a man becomes a slave to whichever piece has slipped its station. A starved spirit serves the body. A weak mind serves the money. A lazy body betrays both. When the chain holds, the man becomes a servant of Allah and a builder of his house, his family, and his community. This lecture concerns that chain. We will define it. We will diagnose where the modern world has inverted it. We will prescribe the correction. And we will instruct you in the protocols that hold the line.
This is for the man who knows he is capable of more.
